Help:Hub Pages

A Hub Page is the critical central page for a game. The page's name is to be the exact name of the game. WikiGuides.neo is structured in such a way that creating and maintaning Hub pages is a little different than what you're probably used to on NeoWikis. This Help Page details how to create Hub pages that meet the Standards, as well as how to maintain and edit them.

General Guidelines

Here are some general guidelines involving Hub pages.

  1. Each Hub's name must be the full name of the game, with capitalization and punctuation intact. For example, the page for "Mirror's Edge" would be located at Mirror's Edge.
  2. Only ONE hub can be created for each game. Additional games in the same series must be created as separate hubs. For example, the page for "Mirror's Edge 2" would be located at Mirror's Edge 2, not as a sub-page of Mirror's Edge.
  3. All information regarding a game must be organized beneath the URL structure of the hub. For example, the page for "Faith Connors" in Mirror's Edge would be at Mirror's Edge/Faith Connors.
  4. Please break up a guide into manageable pages! We suggest having separate sections or Categories for weapons, tips, walkthrough, characters, etc.
  5. Please make the hub page an introductory page with a full index of all pages in the guide.

Creating Hub Pages

First, before you consider creating a Hub page for a game, please make sure there's not a NeoWiki that already covers that game. If there is, then that game's pages do not belong here. Insted, go to that NeoWiki to contribute.

To create a Hub Page for a game, you must know the game's proper, official name. Once you do, type that name into the search bar on the left side of the page, and press "Go" or "Search". If the page does not exist, the resulting search page will say "You searched for [Link]" at the top. To go to the page's edit page, you may click that link. Alternatively, you may simply type the game's name into the address bar right after the /wiki/ part and you will be taken to it, at which time you may click the "Create" tab to get the edit page.

Once on the edit page, type in the following code:

{{subst:New Hub|GameName=Game File Name|Platforms=Platform List}}

Both the GameName and Platforms parameters are completely optional, but you will need to edit them on the Hub page later if you don't specify them now.

  • GameName: This is the game's file name as it appears in the URL of Neoseeker's product page for that game. For example, for Mirror's Edge, you would use mirrors_edge because the game's page on Neoseeker is located at http://www.neoseeker.com/ ... /mirrors_edge/.
  • Platforms: This is a list of platforms on which the game is supported (e.g., PS3, Xbox 360, Wii). Each platform is to be separated by a comma. Supported platforms and corresponding abbreviations are designated by Template:Abbr.

Here's an example of the code you would type if you were creating a Hub page for "Mirror's Edge" (Note: One already exists; this is just an example):

{{subst:New Hub|GameName=mirrors_edge|Platforms=PC, Xbox 360, PS3}}

Once you have typed the code into the edit page, you must simply click the "Save Page" button. The page will be automatically populated with content according to the New Hub Template. If you click the edit tab afterwards, it will be full of code that you can immediately edit.

Header Navigation

Each Hub page should have a header box at the top, as generated by the Template. The top part of the header should have a banner image, while below that should be several lists of links, each list in a different cell. This is done by Template:HubNav.

The links in the first cell are based on the Hub's name and link to important, relatively permanent, pages (mostly categories). For instance, one link goes to the Hub's main talk page, while another to Category:GameName/Images, which is the main Image category for that game. Next to each category link will be a number in parenthesis that designates how many pages and sub-categories are currently contained within the category.

The links in the second cell are also based on the Hub's name, but the pages contained within those categories are not going to remain there for the most part. For instance, the Recent Changes category should keep changing, and people should keep updating pages with more content to minimize the number of pages in the Stubs category. In most cases, you should actually try to lower the number of pages in the maintenance related Categories like "Stubs" and "Pages Requiring Cleanup".

The right-most cell contains links to general pages pertaining to WikiGuides.neo as a whole and NeoWikis in general. For instance, one link is to the Standards Page for WikiGuides, while another is to the NeoWiki Help Forum on Neoseeker, and yet another is to the Color Requests page on WikiGuides.neo.

After the first two cells, and before the right-most cell, there can be one or two cells which you can populate with your own links to important categories or pages that are more specific to the game than the default links. For instance, if you created a category for characters in Mirror's Edge, then you could add a link there to Category:Mirror's Edge/Characters.

As for actually adding the links, if you look at the code for the header table on a Hub page, you'll see the word "HubNav". Below that should be two lines that designate the background and border colors of the cells in the HubNav Template. Right after that, there should be a single pipe symbol, which looks like |. Below the pipe is where you can place a bulleted list of links, as shown below.

{{HubNav
|BgColor=#EEFFFF
|BorderColor=#AACCFF
|
* {{Cat|:Characters|Characters}}
* {{Cat|:Game Play|Game Play}}
* {{Cat|:Walkthroughs|Walkthroughs}}
* {{Cat|:Achievements|Achievement Guide}}
}}

The Template is designed to look the best with no more than six links in each cell, so if you want more, or you want to space out your links across two cells, here's an example of how to do it:

{{HubNav
|BgColor=#EEFFFF
|BorderColor=#AACCFF
|
* {{Cat|:Characters|Characters}}
* {{Cat|:Game Play|Game Play}}
* {{Cat|:Walkthroughs|Walkthroughs}}
* {{Cat|:Achievements|Achievement Guide}}
* {{Cat|:Missions|Missions}}
* {{Cat|:Bosses|Bosses}}
|
* {{Cat|:Weapons|Weapons}}
* {{Cat|:Armor|Armor}}
* {{Cat|:Potions|Potions}}
* {{Cat|:Ingredients|Ingredients}}
}}
